LAURA'S WORK

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my work, I explore play as a vital, subversive tool within a society that often equates adulthood with productivity, conformity, and external success. Play is more than mere recreation; it invites us to step beyond societal expectations and reconnect with a natural, intuitive state of exploration and self-expression. Yet, as we grow older, society often encourages us to abandon play, framing adulthood as the pursuit of measurable achievements and material gain.

The way society teaches children to become adults emphasizes a rigid path focused on career, status, and external milestones. This approach frequently silences children’s voices, discouraging their innate curiosity and diminishing their unique insights. By steering children toward adult-defined goals, we risk dulling their creativity and reinforcing norms that stifle individuality. Adults, in turn, lose access to the fresh perspectives that children naturally offer—perspectives that, unconditioned by societal expectations, reveal new ways of seeing ourselves and the world. Embracing these insights could lead to profound social change, fostering values that prioritize authenticity, empathy, and creative thinking.

Through my art, I incorporate play as an act of quiet resistance, creating experiences that foster openness and self-discovery. My work proposes an alternative vision of adulthood—one that values creativity and personal expression over conformity. If we each were more connected to the things that allowed us, as unique individuals, to access ‘play,’ then I believe the world would be a better place where we are all contributing the best way we can.
